Rising energy costs make every kilowatt-hour noticeable – and the biggest leverage point is in your own four walls: heating and air conditioning. The good news is that you don't have to replace the entire system immediately to reduce consumption. Often, small adjustments in operation and some targeted measures already bring significant relief.

Heating and cooling account for by far the largest part of energy consumption in most households – significantly more than lighting or household appliances. In addition, there is a third effect that is often overlooked: efficiently operated systems work more gently and last longer. Tip 1 – Consciously choose room temperature: Even one degree less noticeably reduces heating energy consumption. Not every room needs the same temperature: the bedroom can be cooler than the living room, and rarely used rooms do not need to be fully heated. The important thing is not to let rooms cool down completely, as otherwise moisture damage threatens.

Tip 2 – Use night setback and time programs: Modern controls automatically lower the temperature when you are sleeping or out of the house, and heat up again in good time. This saves energy without you having to wake up in a cold apartment in the morning or freeze in the evening.

Tip 4 – Keep radiators clear and bleed them: Cladding, curtains, and furniture in front of the radiator trap heat, and gurgling radiators with air in the system deliver less output. Both can be remedied with a few simple steps – a bleeding key is all it takes, and the heat reaches the room freely again.

Tip 5 – Ventilate properly instead of constantly tilting windows: Tilted windows cool down walls and window reveals in winter without really exchanging the indoor air. It is better to ventilate briefly and vigorously with widely opened windows – or use a ventilation system with heat recovery, which automatically takes over air exchange and keeps the heat in the house.

Tip 6 – Insulate pipes and niches: Uninsulated heating pipes in cold basements lose valuable heat on the way to the radiator. Pipe insulation is inexpensive, quick to install, and pays for itself in a short time. Radiator niches on exterior walls are also worth a closer look, as the wall there is often particularly thin.

Tips 7–8: Use efficient technology

Tip 7 – Check and modernize old heat generators: The older the boiler, the greater the potential for savings through modern technology. Heat pumps work particularly efficiently, using environmental heat from the air or ground and generating several times the amount of heat from one kilowatt-hour of electricity. Tip 8 – Operate air conditioning units efficiently: A lot of energy can also be saved when cooling. Do not set the target temperature too low – a moderate difference to the outside temperature is usually sufficient and also healthier. Shading during the day and ventilating in the cool morning hours reduce the cooling load before the technology even starts up. Tip 9 – Retrofit smart thermostats and sensors: Programmable thermostats, window contacts, and presence detection ensure that heat and cold are only generated where they are needed. Which home technology is subsidised by the government?

What is a controlled domestic ventilation system and when is it worthwhile?

A controlled domestic ventilation system (KWL) automatically exchanges stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air, without any need to open windows. Systems with heat recovery use the warmth of the exhaust air to preheat the supply air, saving heating energy. A KWL is especially worthwhile in new builds and renovated buildings with an airtight envelope, for allergy sufferers (pollen filters) and to prevent mould caused by excessive humidity.

How often should air filters in ventilation systems be replaced?

As a rule of thumb: check filters every 3 to 6 months and replace them depending on how dirty they are, but no later than after 12 months. In environments with high dust or pollen levels, more frequent replacement can make sense. Dirty filters reduce air quality, increase energy consumption and strain the system. What is an air pressure switch and when is it mandatory?

An air pressure switch monitors the air pressure in rooms where a fireplace (e.g. a chimney or wood stove) is operated together with an extraction system (e.g. a range hood or ventilation system). It prevents dangerous negative pressure that could draw toxic flue gases into the living space. In many cases, the chimney sweep requires an air pressure switch with DIBt approval so that the joint operation of a fireplace and extraction system is permitted.
